Becoming a Successful Black Business Owner image

As a young child, I knew that I wanted to be a business owner. Most of my admiration was inspired by TV shows, movies and family members who were successful business owners. Growing up in a small, rural town, I knew there was a need for a local hair salon. It started in my parent’s house when friends and family would allow me to express my talent and appreciation for being a hairstylist. Once I begin cosmetology school, I begin to save money and attend as many learning opportunities as possible. In my opinion, this was the beginning of setting up a foundation to be a successful business owner. I acquired several mentors in different areas of the hair industry and often completed work for free. Through their guidance, some failures, and several impactful ideas, I have created a brand that is all thanks to a strong work ethic.

As a single, black mother, being a successful business owner has not been easy. However, I am confident that I am demonstrating to my son and others that being successful is rewarding. In my opinion, there are several factors, aside from those mentioned previously that have aided in my success. Those factors are: strong work ethic, patience, self-motivation, and the ability to always be teachable. Being teachable has afforded me the chance to learn something new each day, either about myself or about something that would bring value to my business.

My most recent success was being selected to be one of the 2020 Faces of Sola. This accomplishment has opened up more opportunities for me to grow my business.
