Recreate This Look: Rooty Cool Blonde
Posted on April 4, 2018
Sola Salon Studios
This rooty blonde is perfect for that client who wants to transition out of her buttery, summer blonde and into something that pairs well with cooler temps and cozy sweaters. Jennifer LaVinge posted this before/after on her Instagram and was so generous to share her color formulas, cutting how-to, and styling steps so that you can recreate this in your own Sola studio.
Client Consultation Notes
Age: 30
Hair Length: Short
Hair Texture: Thin/Fine
“Ashley was a first-time client when I created this look on her. She came into my studio knowing exactly what she wanted to—a cooler, brighter blonde. It was a great consultation that allowed me to get her to this blonde tone because Ashley came to the appointment with photos to help me understand her vision. We both agreed that she would look best going this route!”

The Color
“Ashley’s natural level is 5 and her ends were highlighted to a level 7 with some gold, orange tones. After assessing the color and condition of her hair, I decided to do a full head of babylights and then balayage her ends as well.
Formula 1 (New Growth): Goldwell Oxycur Platin Lightening Powder Dust-Free + 40-vol + ¼ oz. Olaplex #1
Formula 2 (Ends): Goldwell Oxycur Platin Lightening Powder Dust-Free + 30-vol + ¼ oz. Olaplex #1
Formula 3 (Balayage Tips): Goldwell Oxycur Platin Lightening Powder Dust-Free + 30-vol + ¼ oz. Olaplex
Toner Gloss: Redken Shades EQ 1 oz. 8GN + 1 oz. 9P + 1 oz. 8V + 1 oz. 9V
Step 1: After applying Formula 1, perform a full head of babylights with Formula 2.
Step 2: Balayage the tips with Formula 3.
Step 3: Process for 40 minutes, no heat.
Step 4: Rinse and shampoo hair, towel dry.
Step 5: Apply toner for 3 minutes.
NOTE: “I was very cautious with Ashley’s toner and watched it the whole time because her hair was quite porous,” explained Jennifer.
Step 6: Rinse out toner and then apply Olaplex #2.
Step 7: Rinse and then condition entire head with UNITE 7SECONDS™ Conditioner.
The Cut
“Ashley’s cut was in pretty good shape and she didn’t want much done so I just trimmed her ends and created some long layers that followed the shape of her head,” added Jennifer.
The Style
Step 1: Apply Moroccanoil Treatment, Goldwell Dualsenses Rich Repair 6 Effects Serum, and UNITE 7SECONDS™ Leave-In Conditioner to wet hair.
Step 2: Next, layer on UNITE BEACH Day™ Spray and then blow dry using round brush.
Step 3: Flat iron if desired. Lightly spritz Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine for additional shine and hold.
Final Price: $200
